823 Green Grove Road, Tinton Falls, NJ
Wayside Inn

The Half-Way House, later known as the Wayside Inn, was built in 1865 by James H. Dangler on what is now Green Grove Road. It served as a tavern along the stagecoach route between the Allaire Iron Works and the docks in Oceanport. The proprietor, also known as "peg-legged Jim," was a Civil War veteran. The area was originally called Danglerville, then Centerville, and now Wayside. In the late 1800s, in addition to this Inn, there was a post office, a blacksmith shop, a school, a Methodist church, and a general store. Later, there was also a firehouse.

The great problem Wayside had was that the east side of its main street was in Ocean, while the west side of the street was in the town that would eventually be called Tinton Falls.  Today this is a private home.
