Copper Gables
Copper Gables, named for its beautiful copper roof. Sections were added to the building over a period of years until the 1920s, when it was bought by Perry Rawson, a successful stockbroker. Rawson made extensive renovations and added the gable and roof. The building has been a professional office building since the 1980s. Today only the gables have retained the copper roofing. Copper Gables was torn down in 2022 to make room for a new larger firehouse for Oakhurst Fire Company #2.
The barn at Copper Gable was turned into a roller-skating rink in the 1930s by Perry Rawson, an avid skate dancer who wanted to teach his grandchildren to skate dance. Perry Rawson and "Aunt Mae" Rawson went to England to develop their skate dancing techniques and brought Jimmy Lidstone, a star skater, and teacher of skate dancing, to this country. Rawson went on to write several books on the subject.
